SPECIAL REPORT: Currumbin RSL’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service on Sunrise

Sunrise on Location

More than 10,000 people were expected to attend this morning’s dawn service at Currumbin Beach’s Elephant Rock. This annual dawn service on ANZAC Day is steeped in tradition and is now well into its seventh decade at the sea side location. At the crack of dawn to see so many thousands of people in attendance paying homage to our fallen heroes, is very moving.

This year the service was also broadcast nationally by Seven’s Sunrise, who set up an outside broadcast for the event. †The Sunrise crew on location was Natalie Barr and Mark Beretta, sharing the hosting duties, whilst Rebecca Maddern and Simon Reeve were on hand to take care of news and sports duties respectively. The breakfast television show was also co-anchored by Melissa Doyle from London in the lead up to this Friday’s Royal Wedding.

FrostGlobal was lucky enough to be in the crowd to sample the outside broadcast and take a few photos as well. There was a healthy crowd watching the outside broadcast following the conclusion of the Dawn Service. The broadcast had to battle strong winds and the constant threat of rain. In fact, a number of the public standing close to the broadcast stage were woken abruptly when overnight rain sitting on the roof of the structure poured over them.

Below are some more photos of†the Dawn Service and Sunrise’s Outside Broadcast. This was another truly remarkable Dawn Service at Currumbin and it was fantastic to see such a moving occasion have coverage on a national stage, thanks to Seven. One can only imagine what the atmosphere will be like for the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli in 2015 at ANZAC Day Dawn Service sites around the nation and the world.

Lest we forget.
