{"id":711,"date":"2011-06-03T14:42:21","date_gmt":"2011-06-03T04:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/?p=711"},"modified":"2013-06-02T16:36:53","modified_gmt":"2013-06-02T06:36:53","slug":"ones-new-game-plan-kicks-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/?p=711","title":{"rendered":"One&#8217;s new game plan kicks goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-719\" title=\"An Idiot Abroad\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2011\/06\/EyeTVSnapshot2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"305\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 8 May this year, <strong>Network Ten<\/strong> under the leadership of Interim Chief Executive Officer <strong>Lachlan Murdoch<\/strong> relaunched its 24-hour free-to-air digital sports network <strong>One HD<\/strong>, into a male skewing general entertainment channel with premium sport, known as <strong>ONE<\/strong>.?At the announcement of the relaunch, <strong>Mr Murdoch<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/business\/ten-network-plans-relaunch-of-its-hd-channel-one-after-sport-fails-to-draw-viewers\/story-e6freqmx-1226035595795\">said<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;ONE was underperforming from a ratings point of view; rating below a single share point was simply unsustainable and unable to contribute to our earnings&#8230;We were at a dead end with ONE as it stood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ten&#8217;s action plan on One HD was brought about to some extent by its success with <strong>Eleven<\/strong>, which launched in January and has commanded a respectable ratings share, including being #1 digital channel in the key demographics of 13.29, 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54, according to <strong>OzTAM<\/strong> data presented in Mr Murdoch&#8217;s address to the <strong>Macquarie Australia Conference<\/strong> on 5 May this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In that presentation, <a href=\"http:\/\/tencorporate.com.au\/one\/macquarie.aspx\">available here<\/a>, Mr Murdoch also confirmed that <strong>ONE <\/strong>would be seeking a 2.5%+ ratings share average, which would enable the station to contribute meaningful earnings to Ten Network Holdings for the next financial year. The strategy deployed to grow the channel has included introducing consistent weeknight programming, underpinned by targeted factual shows, drama, movies and premium sport. Some of the male skewing programs that have been introduced into the schedule since the relaunch, include <strong>Cops<\/strong>, <strong>Ice Road Truckers<\/strong>, the highly acclaimed <strong>Sons of Anarchy <\/strong>and <strong>An Idiot Abroad<\/strong>. These programs combined with One HD&#8217;s already established sports magazine shows such as <strong>RPM<\/strong> and <strong>the Game Plan<\/strong>, and coverage of <strong>AFL<\/strong>, <strong>Formula 1<\/strong> and <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> appear to have changed the fortunes for the channel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whilst it is still early days since the 8 May relaunch, Frost Global.com has examined the <strong>OzTAM<\/strong> ratings data of <strong>ONE<\/strong> to see the exact effect of the relaunch on <strong>ONE&#8217;s<\/strong> ratings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-715\" title=\"May 2010 v May 2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2011\/06\/One2010v2011_2-1024x648.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/One2010v2011_2-1024x648.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/One2010v2011_2-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/One2010v2011_2.png 1982w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The above graph shows the same three-week period of May 2010 (Red) and May 2011 (Blue). ?The relaunched brand appears to have been the right move by Mr Murdoch as the three-week period for May 2011 has generated stronger ratings for <strong>ONE<\/strong> than the corresponding period last year for <strong>One HD<\/strong>. The spike for the red graph indicates the <strong>3.9%<\/strong> ratings share that <strong>One HD<\/strong> generated on 16 May 2011 when<strong> 322,000 people<\/strong> watched <strong>Mark Webber<\/strong> win the <strong>Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 9 May 2010 to 30 May 2010 period had an average ratings share of <strong>1.49% <\/strong>of the total audience compared with an average ratings share of <strong>2.95% <\/strong>for the 8 May 2011 to 29 May 2011 period.?<strong>Network Ten<\/strong> have on a year-on-year ratings increase of <strong>1.46% <\/strong>for the three-week period in May, and the current average ratings have put the network north of Mr Murdoch&#8217;s target of at least a<strong> 2.5%<\/strong> ratings share.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-716\" title=\"Before Brand Change v Post Brand Change\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2011\/06\/Oneratingscomparison2-1024x535.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Oneratingscomparison2-1024x535.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Oneratingscomparison2-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Oneratingscomparison2.png 1990w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even examining the period from 3 April 2011 to 7 May 2011 (when the channel was still <strong>One HD<\/strong>) compared with the three-week period starting <strong>8 May 2011<\/strong> when the relaunched occurred, there is a clear shift towards <strong>ONE <\/strong>, as a much stronger channel in the free-to-air sector. The period<strong> 3 April 2011 to 7 May 2011<\/strong> had an average ratings share of <strong>1.93%<\/strong> of total people verses <strong>2.95% <\/strong>share for the period <strong>8 May 2011 to 29 May 2011<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-721\" title=\"Before &amp; After Relaunch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2011\/06\/April2011-May20111-1024x638.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/April2011-May20111-1024x638.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/April2011-May20111-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/April2011-May20111-290x180.png 290w, https:\/\/www.frostglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/April2011-May20111.png 1667w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the period before the brand change, there was a shift towards non-sport programming and the decision to carrying through with a full relaunch and rebrand has paid off, based on this data. ?There has been a clear positive ratings trend immediately prior to and immediately after the rebrand, as the above graph indicates. In fact over the period 3 April 2011 to 29 May 2011 there has been a <strong>65.42% increase <\/strong>in <strong>ONE&#8217;s<\/strong> average ratings share.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whilst under the <strong>One HD<\/strong> moniker, the channel did generate strong ratings with simulcast coverage of the <strong>AFL<\/strong>, coverage of premium sporting events such as <strong>Formula 1<\/strong>, <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> and the <strong>Commonwealth Games<\/strong>, there was a lack in consistent programming performance week-on-week. The relaunch has seen premium sports coverage continue to generate strong ratings on weekends, whilst during the week programs like <strong>An Idiot Abroad <\/strong>have achieved solid ratings. For example <strong>An Idiot Abroad <\/strong>had?278,000 viewers on Monday 16 May. This stronger programming slate from <strong>ONE<\/strong> has given?it greater ratings consistency and as a result making the channel more attractive to advertisers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ten Network Holdings<\/strong>&#8216; first half EBITDA for this financial year was<strong> $106 million<\/strong>, down <strong>9.8%<\/strong> on the corresponding first half data for the 2010 financial year.
